Interdisciplinary Studies
Affect & Emotion in the Restorative School [ID1]
This advanced lecture-style workshop begins with an exploration of affect script psychology and recent work in neuroscience in order to better understand human behaviour, including human motivations and the requirements for contented, fulfilled individuals and groups. The workshop then considers the shame family of emotions and, in particular, the difference between shame and guilt. Recent psychological research suggests a critical difference between these oft-confused emotions - a difference which can lead to differing life-long consequences for those prone to shame versus those prone to guilt. These new ideas are at the cutting-edge of RP work worldwide. Finally, the workshop explores ways in which our students’ experience of schooling - in the classroom, in the playground and on the sporting field - can best be structured so as to promote mental health, a positive, developing moral compass, and improved academic results.

Reflective Teaching with Mind and Heart [ID2]
This interactive and reflective workshop seeks to apply the theory addressed in ‘Affect & Emotion in the Restorative School’ directly to our daily practice as teachers - in the classroom, in the playground, in co-curricular activities. Together, participants will explore the day-to-day practical implications of the psychological and educational research, examining how the ‘Inner World of Teaching’ affects our work, and the learning of our students.
